A freshwater weekend! 💦
This Saturday, a few of our swimmers took part in events across the country:

🏞️ Yuliya swam at the Glendalough National Park Swim — a once-a-year opportunity to race in this stunning location, with distances of 750m, 1.5k, and 3.9k.
🏰 Paul tackled the Limerick Island Swim, a 3.9k challenge right through the heart of the city.

Both events are definitely ones to mark in the calendar for next year! ✅

Friends of Killiney LOS Race — Sunday 24.08.25 🌊

This race was put together by Friends of Killiney — a group of dedicated sea swimmers from different clubs who swim daily at Killiney Beach. Many are also LOS regulars, and this race was their way of giving back to the incredible @leinsteropensea committee, volunteers, and supporters who keep the league running 💙

Swimmers could choose between 3.8k, 1.9k, and a special 1k “try-a-race” distance for newcomers. With plenty of prizes for placings and hidden handicap surprises, the atmosphere was electric! 🎁✨

The sea was choppy on the day, and a big shoutout goes to all 3.8k swimmers who braved that second loop. ✨ On Monday, 18th August, our club member Ed Boag took on the challenge of swimming across the Ijsselmeer in Holland — and completed it! 💪🌊

This iconic 22k freshwater swim stretches from Medemblik (North Holland) to Stavoren (Friesland). Conditions on the day were tough — windy and choppy — but Ed powered through. 👏

As half-Dutch, this swim had been on Ed’s bucket list for a long time. For the rest of us, it was inspiring (and great fun!) to watch all his dedicated preparations in the sea, lakes, and pool leading up to it.

We couldn’t be prouder of Ed — not only for this incredible achievement, but also for raising funds for the @thegavinglynnfoundation . 🙌

A huge thank you to his brilliant crew, Bob and Daniel — their very first crewing experience, but they handled it like seasoned pros! They kept Ed on track in the water and kept the rest of us entertained with updates all day (and luckily let him back on the boat afterwards 😂). Thanks also to pilot Arjan for guiding the swim safely.

Beautiful day on the lake! 2-hour drive brought us to stunning Lough Ennell for distances ranging from 1.6k to the mighty 10k — with a bit of everything in between. 🌊 Even with choppy conditions, our swimmers delivered some brilliant results!

🗓️ 13.07.25 – Sandycove SC had the pleasure of hosting the inaugural Roger Casement Cup at the Dún Laoghaire Baths, in partnership with @leinsteropensea ! 🤩

What an incredible venue — perfect for both swimmers and spectators! This was our second race at this location this year, and we’ve received fantastic feedback from swimmers about the setting. Also it was especially meaningful to hold the race in a place with such deep historical ties to our Club.

And what a weekend to choose! The Coastival Festival, organized by @dlrcoco.ie , brought a vibrant buzz to the area — with the Volvo Regatta, lively markets, historic walks, family activities, and of course, the race — it was the perfect way to spend a full day by the sea! 🌊🎉

Even the Irish weather was kind to us! ☀️

As a fun addition to the day, we also set up a water polo pitch to showcase our strong water polo tradition. Even with choppy conditions, our teens and experienced players jumped in for some light-hearted action — and had a blast! The energy and enthusiasm were brilliant, and we’ll definitely be bringing this back for future events 🤽‍♂️🤽‍♀️

We were delighted to see interest to the event from the wider public — and we hope it inspired some new faces to give open water swimming and water polo a try. We’d love to welcome even more people to join us in future water adventures!

On Friday, Sandycove SC swimmers John Curley and Edward Boag swam the Champion of Champions, one of the highlights of Cork Distance week. It involves three swims in one day: 5 laps, then 3 laps and 1 lap of Sandycove Island. A strong WSW wind during the day meant that the 3 lap session took place inside the island, but it was a tough test all the same.

Distances swum were 7.5km, 3km, and 1.6km with a break in between.

Edward did it in 3:24, 1:19 and 43 minutes for a total of 5 hours and 26 minutes in the water 👏 Waiting for details from John.

Water temperature was 14°C 🥶

Sandycove SC was seen in the water at the other Sandycove, near Kinsale, Co Cork at Cork Distance Week.

Many laps every day around Sandycovd Island in the morning and evening at a mile a lap, insterspersed with point-to-point swims from Kinsale Dock, Oysterhaven around (and through!) the. Sovereign Islands, and from the Speckled Door to Sandycove.

Friday will see the Champion of Champions swim: 5 laps, then 3 laps, then 1 lap for a 9 mile total, around 14 km. Some also try to fit in an English Channel qualifying 6 hour swim in thee somewhere.

The week started off foggy, damp but soft, with the sun coming out on Tuesday and Wednesday. There are some concerns about the weather later in the week. Fingers crossed. Sure what can go wrong in such a beautiful spot with such good company!

16.06.2025 our Club Member John Curley successfully completed the English Channel! A huge congratulations to John! 👏🎉

With this incredible achievement, John becomes the 7th Irish person to complete the original Triple Crown: the English Channel, the North Channel, and the Bristol Channel! 🙌

This was John’s third major swim of the year, following False Bay and Foveaux Strait back in January. And he’s not stopping there—more swims are lined up on his journey toward the Toughest Thirteen Swims challenge! 💪

While we were out swimming, our U12 Mixed Team was battling it out in their debut Water Polo Cup — and they did an amazing job! A huge well done to the whole Team!

They played five games today, and we couldn’t be prouder of their effort and determination.

What a beautiful summer day on the beach – and great results for Sandycovers at the Phoenix Masters race!

Our long-distance expert @johncharles.curley claimed the 2nd place 🥈👏, with @ed.duffy.7503 finishing strong in 6th! Brianna Jackson @theswimmingbee also delivered a great performance, placing 4th among the ladies! 🤩

What a fantastic weekend for our swimmers!
On Saturday Paul Kehoe took first place 🥇 in the @glenalbynmastersdublin race - bringing this cup home again! And Billy Kehoe secured third place🥉. With strong performances from Ed Duffy and Sean Flanagan, we also clinched the Men’s Team Prize!💪

Our amazing ladies were just a step away from the team prize on Sunday 🤩: Briana Jackson (5th), Kelly Admirand (6th), Laura O’Connor (8th), and Eibhin Butler (11th). On the men’s side, Colum Murphy (3rd), Ed Duffy (6th), and Daniele D’Alberto (8th) all placed in the top 10 - what a showing! Great to have Otter SC race back in the calendar!

Huge thanks to all club members for swimming, supporting, and cheering on land. And to Clubs and @leinsteropensea for organizing.

Well done to our u15 girls team in the National Cup 2025 bringing home the Cup. The second Cup win for our girls this season. A huge thanks to the organisers and all the teams they met throughout the tournament and of course our coaches, led by Ciara.

During Women in Sport week, we want to give a huge shoutout to our young girls who continue to inspire our entire club in Sandycove! Their passion, hard work, and team spirit are something special. A massive thank you to Ciara and all the coaches for their dedication in helping them grow and thrive.

We’re so excited to see what the future holds for them, but most importantly, we hope they have a blast every step of the way!

ABOUT THE CLUB

Sandycove Swimming & Waterpolo club was founded 1882. We are one of Ireland's oldest swimming and waterpolo clubs. We have junior, senior and masters teams for waterpolo and open sea race swimming teams. We also have a famous diving history.

Waterpolo

Sandycove has multiple teams in waterpolo. We currently field:

Junior - under 19s, 14s and 10s.
Senior (Division 1)
Masters (Division 3)

Sea Swimming

We participate in multiple open sea swims as organised by the Leinster Open Sea Swim, including hosting our own sea swim in July each year!

Community

Sandycove Swimming and Waterpolo Club is one of the oldest swimming & waterpolo clubs in Ireland, having a very strong community ethos. We have a lot of fun - be it participating in waterpolo tournaments, sea swims, going on over-sea trips and social events. We welcome new members to our community!
